A merchant seaman who asked not to be identified has claimed that a significant number of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers in Australia’s resources industry regularly cheat on their urine drug tests, reports Brendan Foster for Stuff.co.nz.
Weird urine test cheating tricks employed
The anonymous tipster, who is a worker in WA’s North West, says most FIFO workers are familiar with the methods used to fake urine drug test results. He even admitted that he is one of those workers, and had successfully faked test results a number of times in the past.
Among the tricks that a number of these drug-abusing employees employ are fake penises, which they squeeze to expel “clean” urine even under watch by drug testing professionals. Then there are those condoms filled with “clean” urine that female workers with drug use issues insert into their vagina, and break at the right time for their samples.
To say that this rampant cheating on urine drug tests is alarming would be an understatement. These FIFO workers commit substance abuse at work in high-risk industries, and to have them continue working because their drug tests were faked would be endangering the health safety of everyone in the workplace. Even stricter drug testing protocols are needed, especially for these FIFO workers. Perhaps saliva drugs tests would be a better choice, since getting past oral fluid collection with tricks could prove to be tough, or even impossible
