Part of Operation Austrans
The crackdown, which is part of a national road safety initiative called Operation Austrans, targeted the Albury headquarters of O’Brien Transport, which was involved in a serious crash earlier this month, with its driver not only testing positive for drugs, but also getting caught with drugs in his vehicle.
The drivers who failed the drug test, however, did not work for O’Brien, but for the other companies which the police and RMS staff have also included in the operation. One drove a truck, while the other was a car driver.
Two drivers failing a drug test while on the road may not be much, but it’s already two less drivers endangering themselves and other people by driving under the influence of illicit substances. Far too many road accidents have been caused by drugs, and any news that gets drug users off the road will always be a welcome one. If only all police authorities in all of Australia had the funding to equip all units with drug testing kits, the roads of Australia will be a much safer place.
