Additional information for travelling out from Perth
Western Australia has certain safety issues and restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. These hold true whether you’re travelling out of Perth for domestic or international travel,
1. If you’re travelling abroad, get a travel exemption from the Australian government.
First, check if you’re allowed to travel abroad.
Currently, there’s a general ban on overseas travel for Australian citizens and permanent residents. (Note: New Zealand is not covered in this current ban.) But you can obtain an official exemption from the government if you:
- Are travelling out of Australia for work related to the COVID-19 outbreak response (e.g., providing medical aid or distributing donations)
- Have urgent official work to do abroad for your employer or company
- Need urgent medical treatment available only in another country
- Are going on a trip that is of national importance to Australia (e.g., representing the country in the Olympics)
- Are travelling for compelling reasons or on compassionate grounds (e.g., visiting or caring for a dying parent)
To obtain an official exemption, apply online with the Department of Home Affairs no later than 2 weeks before your planned trip.
2. Comply with the foreign destination country’s visa and safety requirements.
Most countries now require you to show proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test outcome dated 2-3 days before your entry into their territory. Therefore, always double-check what the latest entry requirements are for Australian citizens or residents going into any particular country.
Below are a few links to embassies or consulates of the common destination countries. Contact them for details on their requirements.
- Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Perth
- Consulate General of India at Perth
- Japanese Consulate General in Perth

3. Comply with Perth Airport and airline safety measures.
If you’re flying out of Perth on a domestic or international plane flight, be sure to follow Perth Airport’s safety measures for passengers. Masks and social distancing are required.
Check with your airline as well for their rules on PCR testing, masking, and social distancing aboard their aircraft.
4. Follow WA safety protocols and restrictions.
Whatever your itinerary might be (i.e., travelling out of the country, within Western Australia, or regionally), always check for the latest advisories by the Western Australia state government.
Take note of specific guidelines and restrictions for:
Public events and private gatherings
Currently, there are no restrictions on the capacity or number of persons attending. But these may change according to the rates of infection within Western Australia or in other states.
Regardless of capacity limitations, many public venues or business establishments must have a COVID-19 safety plan and a contact register. If you are visiting any such places, comply with their safety requirements and sign up in their registers.
You are also encouraged to use SafeWA, the WA government’s free online contact register app. Many businesses and venues within Western Australia use this app to maintain their contact registers.
Aged care facilities
If you’re visiting anyone in respite or aged care homes in Perth or anywhere within Western Australia, there are additional restrictions for you to go by.
Generally, you’re not supposed to visit if:
- You’ve gone overseas within the last 14 days
- You’ve come into close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 infection in the last 14 days
- You do not have an up-to-date influenza vaccination
- You display any of the symptoms of influenza or COVID-19
For more details and any changes, please visit the Western Australia government site.
Remote Aboriginal communities
Western Australia has over 200 remote Aboriginal communities in the Midwest, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields and Kimberley regions. The people of these smaller communities are more vulnerable to COVID-19 than others in the state. Thus, Western Australia has placed strict travel restrictions for these areas.
At the moment, tourists and casual visitors are prohibited from coming in and interacting with locals. If you are planning to go through these areas on your trip out of Perth, you can only drive through them without ever getting into direct contact with members of the community.
Only residents, visiting relatives, and people studying, working, or providing essential goods and services can enter and linger. Additionally, if outsiders display symptoms of COVID-19,
These people cannot enter a community if they have COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19, have come into contact with a confirmed infection case, or have no recent negative PCR test result.
For more details, see the WA site page on travel restrictions for remote Aboriginal communities.
The WA controlled border arrangement
If your travel itinerary involves going in and out of Perth or Western Australia, be mindful of the state’s controlled border arrangement. This is a system that ensures the safety of both WA residents and travellers. Conditions for entry and quarantine will depend on where people have come in from and if they’ve had contact with infection cases in the past 14 days.
For more details, please check with the WA site page for updates on the controlled border.

The Testing Process
Speed, accuracy and safety are essential. So we focus our PCR testing process on all three. SW Labs’ new COVID-19 testing facilities and services employers are available throughout the country.
The Gold Standard of Testing
The industry considers PCR the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19 infection. The laboratory test detects RNA, which contains the genetic information of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If a donor’s swab sample shows evidence of virus RNA, it means they are actively infected.
Unlike rapid antibody tests, the PCR searches for the presence of Coronavirus RNA rather than evidence of the body’s immune response. RNA is a key component of a virus’s anatomy and is unique to that particular virus. Once infection occurs, the coronavirus’s signature RNA can be detected, even before antibodies or symptoms of the disease appear. In contrast, an antibody test cannot determine this until at least a week after infection.
By looking for coronavirus RNAs, doctors can tell early on whether or not a person has contracted COVID-19.
Accredited COVID-19 Screening to ISO 15189
When testing for highly infectious diseases like COVID-19, accuracy could very well be a matter of life and death. That’s why our coronavirus screening service follows strict guidelines set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA).
Our processes are run according to ISO 15189 provisions and the CDNA National guidelines (Coronavirus disease 2019 – COVID-19; including both Section 7 and Appendix A: SARS-CoV-2 Laboratory testing). We also comply with National Pathology Accreditation Advisory Council (NPAAC) guidelines and employ clinical microbiologists who provide supervision for COVID testing.
Highly Efficient Collection and Testing
We understand how important it is to have safe and efficient COVID-19 testing. Our laboratories have full accreditation from NATA/RCPA (National Association of Testing Authorities and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia). Our staff are highly trained to safely collect and transport nasal swabs.
