For drinking orange juice mixed with alcohol while on duty at a hospital in Wirral, United Kingdom, a female nurse was meted a six-month suspension, according to a report by John Siddle for Liverpool Echo.
Alcohol use at work put patients at risk of harm
The registered nurse, identified as Patricia Moorhouse, was suspended after a panel put together by nursing watchdog Nursing and Midwifery Council declared that her alcohol use at work put her patients at Arrowe Park hospital in harm’s way. The report did not say if her employer had a clear workplace alcohol policy in place.
The NMC reached the conclusion after hearing testimonies from Mrs. Moorhouse’s colleagues who noticed alcohol on her breath and her slurred speech. Further hurting the 30-year nursing veteran’s case was the discovery in a recovery room where she had been working of a bottle of orange juice and a cup, which “tasted strongly of alcohol”.
