An article by Liz Burke for News.com.au puts a spotlight on the high functioning alcoholics of Australia, many of whom are actually sophisticated, well-educated and gainfully employed citizens.
The report focused on female professionals whose lives and careers were upended by their drink dependence. It also quotes research by the University of Western Sydney, which says 16 per cent of midlife women are dependent on alcohol. The researchers also believe that 33 percent are misusing alcohol.
According to Dr. Cameron Brown, a psychologist, Australia’s drug and drinking problems are “bleeding into professional circles”, addicts are also getting older. This is corroborated by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, which said that more people 40 years of age and are availing of publicly-funded alcohol and other drug treatment agencies.
