Drug and Alcohol Use in Darwin and the Northern Territory
Darwin and the rest of the Northern Territory continue to experience high rates of drug and alcohol use among its residents.
In a report submitted to the NT Parliament, cannabis topped the list of the most commonly used drugs in the region. Other popular drugs of abuse include MDMA (ecstasy) and methamphetamine.
Similarly, the latest National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program (NWDMP) found high consumption rates involving MDMA, meth, and cocaine among NT residents.
As much as 16% of drug users abuse cannabis, based on the NT Parliament report. Cannabis use was highest among young teenagers and young adults (ages 14-29) and old people (ages 60 and above). The NT government attributed the high usage rate to how easy it was to obtain cannabis in the region.
The NT had a higher rate of MDMA use compared to the national average. It was the second most popular illegal drug in the region. Meanwhile, the NWDMP estimated that NT residents consumed as much as 32.4 kg of MDMA in 2019. This was more than 8 kg higher compared to the 24.1 kg that were consumed in 2018.
The Northern Territory has one of the lowest rates of meth use in the country, according to the NT Parliament report. However, the drug is still more common in the region than cocaine, ecstasy, or opioids. As much as 71% of injecting drug users in the NT use meth. Wastewater analysis showed that the average consumed methamphetamine in NT jumped to 84.8 kg in 2019 from a low of 75.5 kg in 2018.
Cocaine use remained relatively high in a number of sites in the NT. However, researchers detected a slight decline in the overall average consumption of the drug. The NWDMP report showed that the amount of cocaine used in the region dropped to 22.8 kg in 2019 from a high of 27.4 kg in 2018.
The graph below shows how much methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine consumption in the Northern Territory have increased between 2018 and 2019.
