Who should get a COVID-19 PCR test?

monitor covid-19 symptoms

As of April 2022, NSW Health does not have restrictions on who can be PCR-tested for COVID-19. However, they recommend that you take a PCR test if:

  • You are experiencing any symptoms that suggest a COVID-19 infection, whether for the first time or as a renewed onset. Symptoms are any combination of the following: fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, loss of sense of smell or taste, headache, muscle or body aches, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhoea.
  • You have had close or casual contact with another person who has a COVID-19 infection (whether you’re displaying symptoms or are asymptomatic).
  • You plan to visit an aged care residence, healthcare facility, or a vulnerable person. (Note: If you’re visiting a facility, please check their specific COVID-19 safety requirements first before taking your test.)
  • You have arrived in NSW from an overseas trip. (Please refer to the NSW Health Guidelines for all international arrivals.)

For the latest information, visit the NSW Health website, What COVID-19 test should I do? | NSW Government.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

1. If you are getting tested for COVID-19, you should self-isolate until you obtain a negative PCR test result or unless otherwise advised by NSW Health.

2. Wear a mask when you go to the test collection centre.

FAQs covid PCR test
Is a Medicare rebate available for COVID-19 test results for travel?

Do I need a doctor’s referral to undergo a PCR test?

No, you don’t need a doctor’s referral to schedule a test.

Do I need to refrain from eating, drinking, or taking medicines before taking the PCR test?

No, you can eat or drink anything. It won’t affect the test.

What if I get a positive result?

SW Labs automatically notifies NSW Health if you have a positive result.

What if I have an ‘indeterminate’ result?

We will re-test your sample. If the subsequent result is still indeterminate, we will contact you for another sample collection.

Why a PCR test? Why not an antigen test?

The government and healthcare industry consider PCR the gold standard for diagnosing COVID-19 infections. Compared to rapid antigen tests, PCR tests can detect the specific coronavirus RNA of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, soon after infection and well before antibodies or even symptoms appear.

What is a nasopharyngeal swabbing for a PCR test like?

To obtain a nasopharyngeal specimen, the collector will insert a flexible wire shaft swab through your nostril, as the swab needs to touch your nasopharynx. The depth of the insertion is equivalent to the distance from your nostril to your ear.

First, the collector will gently rub and roll the swab. Next, he or she will leave the swab in place for a few seconds to absorb secretions. The whole process lasts only several seconds.

After collecting swab samples, the collector will secure the specimen inside sterile vials containing 2 ml of viral transport media. Your vial will be sent to our COVID-19 testing laboratory to screen for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
