Two mine sites in Western Australia were raided last month as part of the government’s crackdown on illicit drugs, according to a report by Esmarie Swanepoel for Mining Weekly.
The subjects of the drug raids by Western Australian police were iron-ore miner Fortescue’s Christmas Creek mine and the Cloudbreak mine site.
The raid was welcomed by Western Australian Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion, who said drugs are a major safety issue, especially in an industry whose workers handle massive and very complex machinery.
Minister Marmion has also called on the Department of Mines and Petroleum to fully support businesses faced with growing drug use issues. He also called on workers in the industry to educate themselves on their company’s workplace drug policies.
